The Thermal Control Group (TCG) invents, designs, analyzes, prototypes, and tests new and groundbreaking thermal and mechanical devices to solve global health and global development challenges. TCG staff members are skilled in thermal, mechanical and/or electrical engineering and design and typically have a degree in a related engineering field. They turn “art to part” in bringing together creative technical problem solving with prototype development with experience in the unique design and environmental needs of the developing world. TCG staff members run the professional experience spectrum from junior designers focused on a particular engineering tool set, all the way up to senior project managers who can define a project from limited business problem information and potentially manage it all the way through to commercialization handoff.

The Associate Engineer will be responsible for delivering deep and broad mechanical and thermal engineering skills and content to projects within the TCG at IV Lab under the direction of a senior project lead through design, analysis, manufacturing liaison, testing, and field demonstrations. The successful candidate must have strong, demonstrated engineering skills in design and analysis, and be able to use those skills to confidently and clearly advocate in an extremely technical, collaborative environment. The successful candidate will have manufacturing experience and a history of building successful, clever hardware.  A candidate having knowledge of and experience working in developing countries is a substantial plus.


  • Perform engineering tasks to an agreed upon schedule and budget
  • Design parts, assemblies, test hardware, and manufacturing tooling that meet requirements using engineering principles and a thorough understanding of first order relationships between critical parameters
  • Analyze hardware using thermal and structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) tools to reduce cost, weight, and manufacturing error
  • Design and perform validation and acceptance testing to verify both the validity of the hardware design and the quality of the manufacturing
  • Potentially travel to the Developing World to demonstrate hardware and collect feedback
  • Be responsible for overall project execution and potentially lead projects
  • Participate in cross-functional technology development teams to help move projects from concept into prototyping and product development
  • Clearly communicate/present product development updates to internal and external team members within the Lab
  • Submit drawings and execute projects in compliance with relevant standards (notably ASME Y14.5 and IV Lab standards)
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 5+ year experience required; advanced degree is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience designing parts/systems with strong thermal components
  • Consistent professional trajectory as a Mechanical Engineer, R&D Engineer or related title with experience in mechanical, structural, thermal design and analysis
  • Strongly demonstrated capability with a 3-D CAD package, such as Solidworks (preferred), Pro/E, Catia, Unigraphics, or similar
  • Ability to design, execute, and analyze experiments in order understand physical phenomena relevant to research of interest, reduce risk, and demonstrate performance of prototypes
  • Strongly demonstrated experience analyzing complex mechanical solutions with an advanced engineering analysis or simulation tool, such as FEA, DFM, or mechanism synthesis/analysis
  • Demonstrated teamwork
  • Experience producing drawings, and reviewing the drawings of others, for engineering rigor, portability, quality measurement, and repeatability
  • Experience with MS Office and MS Project
  • Experience with medical devices and or complex electro-mechanical devices is a plus
  • Plastic injection molding, laserjet, or 3D printing experience is a plus
  • Expertise with Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.
  • Expertise with a mechanical design file management system such as Enterprise Product Data Management (EPDM) is a plus
