The Cooking Lab is the publisher of both Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking (2011), Modernist Cuisine at Home (2012) and Modernist Bread (2017). Our interdisciplinary team in Bellevue, Washington includes scientists, development chefs, and a full editorial department, as well as business and marketing staff—all dedicated to advancing the state of the culinary arts through the creative application of scientific knowledge and experimental techniques. In addition to our award-winning Modernist Cuisine books, The Cooking Lab provides consulting, R & D, and invention services to food companies and culinary equipment makers, large and small. Our research laboratory in Bellevue includes one of the best equipped kitchens in the world as well as access to a full set of machining, analytical, and computational facilities, provided by the Intellectual Ventures Lab.

The Cooking Lab is looking for a highly motivated contractor for the Digital Asset Manager position to join the James Beard award-winning Modernist Cuisine books team. 

This detail-oriented contractor position requires the ability to work with our current photographers, photo editors, art director, editorial and marketing staff, and the head chef coordinating tagging, photo editing, and photo research for stock images for the book, organizing and maintaining an extensive photo library. 

The role is a contractor position and will be based in our offices in Bellevue, Washington. 

  • Strategize, implement and fine-tune workflow of the Digital Asset Management system. Act as Administrator of the DAM system, creating new Catalogs, registering new users, defining permissions for those users. 
  • Archive all imagery
  • Assign metadata, check for misspellings and illegal characters in file names
  • Work alongside our editorial, design and photography teams for book manuscripts, presentations, social media and other marketing/PR related events 
  • Work alongside our Culinary, Design, Editorial, and Marketing teams to fill photo needs for publication layouts and presentations
  • Organize and maintain a large image library including key wording, image ranking and archiving. 
  • Process RAW images 
  • Stock image research and licensing including negotiating pricing with stock agencies and other photo rights holders
  • Maintain image license details by including necessary metadata to insure accurate usage rights.
Knowledge of:
  • Photography, photo editing and book production process, work in a culinary environment is a plus.
  • Stock photo research including understanding of rights management, public domain and creative commons.
  • Working with digital asset management software.
  • Photoshop, Lightroom, Indesign, and Microsoft Office.
  • Windows including managing Windows Services, permission and file structures.

  • 2 - 4 years of full-time work experience as a Digital Asset Manager
  • Must have the ability to work under pressure with a strong record of meeting deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree required
