Project Manager – Deep Science Fund

Intellectual Ventures ("IV") is a privately-held, invention investment company based in Bellevue, Washington. Deep Science (DS) is an evergreen invention development fund managed by Intellectual Ventures founded on IV’s belief in the power of independent and unconventional approaches to problems. The Fund’s charter is to take existing ideas, inventions and research results that have a long-term horizon and develop them towards the end goal of commercial viability. The Fund’s IP portfolio is very deep and quite broad with asset groups in advanced physics, chemistry, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and agriculture.  The existing team has a long track record as technologists and as creators of successful products, startups and businesses.  
Deep Science seeks an experienced Project Manager (PM) to provide logistical and financial tracking for multiple simultaneous technical projects and support the Fund operations.  

The PM will be a strong communicator, with skill and experience in program management for multiple, simultaneous, complex projects.  The PM must be effective at coordinating small groups of technical, business and legal professionals inside of IV; take the strategic and tactical guidance from those teams and then serve as the day-to-day point of contact on multiple ongoing external research, development, and commercialization projects; and be a critical component in the overall day-to-day operation of the Fund.  

Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Head of the Deep Science Fund, the PM will:  
  • Maintain project schedules, track key deliverables, progress toward milestones, timelines, resources, and costs from initiation and pilot stages through to productization and commercialization hand-off on multiple simultaneous projects
  • Work within the Fund and each project team within the Fund to coordinate budgets, resource allocation, and timelines to meet external deadlines
  • Work with Finance to produce regular budget variance reports and projections
  • Work with IV Legal to assist development of contracts, master service agreements, statements of work, and non-disclosure agreements with co-development partners and consultants
  • Report regularly on project progress
  • Work with project teams to track risk mitigation and contingency strategies, and engage directors to remove roadblocks and maximize team efficiency and effectiveness
  • Coordinate and facilitate team meetings, stakeholder meetings, workshops identifying opportunities for invention, and pre-initiative research 
  • Prepare and distribute meeting minutes, capturing and tracking actions and outcomes
  • Manage action item logs to ensure action items are promptly addressed and closed out
  • Support quarterly founder reviews by ensuring on-time preparation and delivery of required pre-reads and presentations
  • Oversee quality assurance for presentations, reports and external communications, ensuring they are presented professionally 
  • Work within Fund team to ensure clear articulation and communication of project missions, objectives and plans, ensure that team roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and understood, and ensure that new initiative possibilities within the Fund’s strategic context are properly planned and resourced
  • Ability to serve as the initial point of contact for internal and external customers
  • Depending on skills and experience, own relevant elements of the Deep Science Fund, working with leads and team members to ensure that these elements align in time, budget and expectations
  • Develop, implement, and manage systems and processes to support efficient and effective project execution
Key Qualifications and Required Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree (in a related field) and 3+ years of project management experience required
  • Technical degree or 5+ years in a high-tech (physical science, hardware, or bio) environment required 
  • Proven ability to effectively optimize multiple priorities, work on multiple projects, and excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Innate attention to detail
  • Proactive self-starter with approachable with a positive can-do attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results with cross-functional teams in a highly technical business environment
  • Demonstrated poise, professionalism and confidence when communicating with and presenting to high-profile internal and external customers
  • High proficiency with MS Office program suite required; experience/proficiency with Microsoft Project a plus
  • Available for full-time work at Intellectual Ventures; limited travel may be required
