The Rapid Bacterial Viability Detection Group at Intellectual Ventures Lab focuses on bacterial viability assays of relevance to Global Health and Global Development use cases. We combine advanced biotechnology methods with modern analytical chemistry tools to invent, develop, evaluate, and support commercialization of rapid bacterial viability detection systems. The diverse skill set of the group includes expertise in molecular biology, microfluidics, cellular biology, and chemical engineering.

The Rapid Bacterial Viability Detection Group is looking for a Research Scientist to support reporter phage assay research and product development. The ideal candidate will have specific experience in the development of reporter phage assays for bacterial detection, with a strong background in bacteriophage biology, bacterial pathogenesis, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills are essential and the capability to effectively work in a team environment is required.

Responsibilities:
  • Designing experiments, performing them in the laboratory, as well as supporting others to perform them
  • Bacteriophage isolation, amplification, characterization and assessment of phage infection parameters
  • Reporter phage assay development
  • Maintaining of laboratory records and documentation
  • External and internal communication of results
  • Occasional travel to collaborators or field sites
Required Skills:
  • Must be hands-on, capable of designing experiments, performing them in the laboratory, as well as supporting others to perform them
  • Reporter phage assay development experience
  • Familiarity with methods for optimizing phage function and host recognition
  • Molecular cloning (cassette and site-directed mutagenesis, CRISPR Cas9, ligation independent cloning, Gibson assembly, library generation, etc.) 
  • Microbial cultivation 
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility and cytotoxicity testing
  • Protein expression, purification and analysis techniques 
Desired Skills:
  • Reporter phage assay product development, including process scale up and QC
  • Project management expertise
  • Assay development and optimization
  • System and instrumentation integration experience
  • Flow cytometry experience
  • Immunoassay development
  • Microfluidic device development
Education and Work Experience:
  • Requires a PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbial Pathogenesis, Microbial Genetics, Virology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Requires a minimum of two-year relevant laboratory experience in industry or academia after PhD degree
  • Biosafety level 3 experience is preferred
